What is it? 

Merchandising is a critical function within a business model that drives growth. Merchandisers are strategists and planners. Their key responsibility is to develop Product Assortment Plans that drive the product line plans which informs collection assortment and sourcing strategy. Merchandisers also drive the Sales Plan which informs regional assortment and account strategy.

Why it matters?

Many apparel collections fail due to bad performance contributed to a lack of planning. The goal is to have the right merchandise, at the right place, at the right time, in the right quantities, and at the right price. Merchandising planning maximizes profitability by limiting markdowns and achieving / exceeding sales targets while also limiting excessive inventory.
